The Next Steps have been designed to further your orthodontic
education. These courses build on the basic concepts
learned in beginning orthodontic courses. Session 1
and 2 may be taken individually or jointly. In Session
2 the business side of incorporating orthodontics into
your practice will be discussed as well as expanding
your patient selection criteria to include adults. Session
3 will deal with even more complicated cases including
surgical and non-surgical Class III and TMJ cases. Wire
bending will also be demonstrated at this level.

The Connection is a 2 and 1/2 day weekend in which Dr. Dave will present an orthodontic topic. He will present his latest cases and most current techniques as well as review your cases which you are currently treating. These weekends are similar to a study club format. On occasion, a guest speaker will be invited to share with you his techniques. Stay connected with Dr. Dave through the Connection!
Susan is a Registered Dental Assistant working with Dr. David Jackson as a chair-side orthodontic assistant in Farmersville and Royce City, Texas. In addition to working with Dr. Jackson in the dental office, she assists him in teaching his Straight Wire Series courses. After assisting in these courses over time, Susan and Dr. Jackson, decided it was time to offer an assistants program. Dedicated to making new doctors to orthodontics successful, Susan understands the importance to have empowered assistants. This is how The Empowered Ortho Assistant Program was born. As a detail-oriented person, Susan is able to bring her knowledge and experience to EMPOWER orthodontics assistants on all levels. She will motivate her students to go back into their offices and be able to support their doctors to make orthodontics successful.

The Basic Empowered Spring 2011
THE BASIC EMPOWERED FOR DENTAL ASSISTANTS IS A two weekend program for assistants, designed by assistants and taught by assistants. This course will have hands-on exercises and cover the following topics:
The Standard of Care in Orthodontics; Orthodontic Terminology; the Palmer System; Understanding Mirror Photography; Initial and Final Records; Banding and Bracketing Teeth; Understanding Bracket Placement and Height; Removing Bands and Brackets; Phase I and Phase II Orthodontics; Understanding Class I, II, III Malocclusions; Understanding the Straight Wire Series and the Utility Arch Wire Series; Process for Wire Placement and Tooth Movement; Different Ways to Tie in Wires; Understanding Elastic Wear; Appliances and their Purposes; Use of Springs; Making the Lower Bonded Retainer; Four-Handed Orthodontic Assisting; and Preparing the Patient and the Assistant for the Doctor.
The Advanced Empowered Fall 2011
THE ADVANCED EMPOWERED FOR DENTAL ASSISTANTS IS A two weekend program for assistants, designed by assistants and taught by assistants. This course ALSO have hands-on exercises and cover the following topics:
Understanding and placing the MDA (multidistalizing appliance); Understanding and placing the NPE (nitanium palatal expander); understanding and placement of the "Big Daddy" - a buccal expansion alternative; understanding accentuated curve in rectangular arch wires and understanding the concept of buccal root torque; understanding the concept of full intercuspation of the premolars, cross arch elastics, and learning how to prepare a simple sectional arch wire; learning how to "basket weave" the teeth together with long ligatures for anchorage; retention and standard of care final records; understanding how to maximize the patient's insurance benefits; how to schedule wisely and profitably within your general practice; and how to get paid for your orthodontics. Really understand the business side of ortho.
